The word "Karakuri" can be defined as "the mechanism that drives a machine or a mechanical device to trick or teach a person or take a person by surprise". These detailed reproductions were introduced in the Late Edo period, (1603-1867) and modeled after the mechanisms described in the "Karakuri Zui," the only existing Karakuri mechanical doll manual, written in 1796. Each dolls movements and gestures were used as traditional forms of entertainment. The Karakuri Doll is arguably the original form of modern robots! The tea-serving doll is the
most typical example of the Karakuri Doll or Ningyo (Puppet or doll) one and one
